The Beginning
So I have been trying to figure out what I should add to this page. I know what I can do -- but I want to push myself to try to do more than I am comfortable with. This may take some time to figure out... therefore, I want to keep my thoughts organized. What better way than including a Table of Contents?! The funny thing is, I have no idea on how it works!

One of the most frequent questions I get asked as a teacher is... "Do you know how to play...?" or "Have you played...?" The answer to these questions is "no!!!" I didn't grow up with a video game console in the house (but I had one in college - my roommate's) and I don't have one now. So even thought as at teenager I did play with the Nintendo games (Pac-Man, Joust, Centipede, etc.) at friend's homes and at the arcade (man, did I lose a lot of quarters!) I really never got that interested in video games. However, I do play Tetris on my cell phone (when bored) and occasionally I will play one of the Wii games (actually, only once). My wife and oldest son are more into the Wii games than I am but I have promised that we will get one for the family sometime down the road... a long way down in my world!

So as we have worked on the Marauder Newspaper (my name for the student-run blog) and I have encouraged some of you to write reviews/how-to's of video games I thought "wouldn't now be a good time for me to step out of my comfort zone and try something new?" So I have embedded a video game below to try to master... it may take me a bit of time but I will try. Why don't you give it a shot and let me know what you think.

Play Games at AddictingGames

Oh yeah, forgot to tell you -- no shooting, killing, or excitement in my video games -- just a bit of thinking required!

The Ending
I just spent some time searching around for the answer to my initial quandry re how to use the ToC (Table of Contents) box. It appears that once you have opted to use the box any time you add a word or words and change the font size from Normal to Heading 1, 2, ...5, or 6 it is automatically registered in the ToC box. Kinda cool!! Especially if this page gets to long...

If you want to add a ToC box, do the following: select embed widget from the Editor toolbar; then click the Wikispaces icon; from the list that appears choose Table of Contents.

The Oops
One of the drawbacks of working at home is that often what you have done (that you think will work at school) really doesn't. This is the case with the video game I embedded above. As a result, the only way you can play is if you are at home. Bummer!!! So feel free to try it out at home...

In the meantime, I will go looking for something that can be accessed from school and still requires me to stretch my boundaries...

The Change
So I am trying something new - adding music videos. However, rather than just picking something new and fresh : ) I am going to go old school and take you back in time. : ) These are two of my favorites songs:

  • "It's the End of the World (And I Feel Fine)" by REM ~ a classic piece of American music. When I got married I wanted this to be the song for our first dance. Needless to say, it was not. However, Wendy (my wife) and I have never been able to truly find a song that seems to fit us quite as well as this one. Consequently, if you were to ask her or I what our song is -- we would both agree that "It's the End of the World (And I Feel Fine)". Please enjoy...

  • There are a number of other songs that make my top ten best of all time songs. However, U2 influenced so many people and artists that to not mention them would be a diservice to their body of work. As I majored in United States history and have very much found the decade of the 60's a watershed point in American history, the influence of Martin Luther King, Jr. cannot be denied. U2's "Pride (In the Name of Love)" pays homage to him and the change he brought about. Listen to the lyrics that have been blended beautifully with the music...
